A Laptop Computer Checklist

man with laptop on lapA computer laptop is no longer simply for students or business travelers but rather is quickly becoming the only computer in many homes. Carry this checklist with you when you go to purchase a new laptop and take some time to compare models.

Processor – The key is to find a balance between speed and economy. Don’t assume the fastest CPU speed is necessarily the best for you. Some processors are much more efficient meaning they provide better processing without needing faster CPUs. The very best value going right now are the Intel multi-core processors. Ranging from Core2 to Core5, these processors are like having multiple processors working at the same time. Everything from spreadsheets to video benefit from these efficient speedsters.

Memory – Since the cost of memory has fallen dramatically get as much as you can when you purchase your laptop. Manufacturers generally match memory to the design of their machines so you will always get more for less at the time of purchase.

Storage Devices – Upgrading a laptop hard drive will cost you more than anything else in its life. There are difficult to replace and in some models next to impossible. Unless it’s a netbook don’t settle for less than 350 Gigs and aim for 500 if one is available without adding too much to the cost. No laptop should be without a CD that both reads and writes and a DVD combo is even better.

Keyboard – Here’s one feature that is overlooked all too often. Laptops vary widely in the usefulness of their keyboards. Practicing typing on every model you are considering before making a purchase. Some laptop keyboards have inset keys that are small and hard to avoid making mistakes on.

Screen – The screen should have a crisp look that reduces glare to a minimum. Don’t settle for anything less than 1280 by 800 pixels.

Expansion Ports – All laptops come with at least 2 USB ports and many have 4. Also check to see if the unit you are looking at has at least 1 Firewire port for video and a Bluetooth port for remote devices.

Wi-Fi – Don’t consider any laptop that doesn’t have internal Wireless Internet capabilities. Any maker that doesn’t include Wi-Fi isn’t serious about laptops.
