Paralegals assist lawyers with daily work, including case preparation, trial work, and corporate meetings. They work for private law firms, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and corporations. Online paralegal studies take from six months to four years for completion. Learners may earn an online paralegal certificate in as little as six to twelve months. However, people wishing to attain an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies can plan on two to four years for completion, respectively. Online paralegal students may study specialized areas like bankruptcy, employment law, intellectual property, and/or civil litigation. Although, businesses hire certified paralegals, those with an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree have the advantage.

Graduates of online paralegal studies may be eligible to sit for the Certified Legal Assistant (CLA) or Certified Paralegal (CP) exam. Students are only eligible to sit for the two-day examination, if they attended an online school that meets the criteria and standards established by the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA). Other credentialing bodies include the American Alliance of Paralegals and the National Federation of Paralegal Associations, although the NALA is the most recognized. All certifications require continuing education for renewal every two years.
 

Online paralegal coursework involves weekly participation by the student, written assignments, and tests. Learners study different types of laws, such as criminal, civil, family, tax, and corporate, as well as ethics, legal writing, and investigation. Many online paralegal programs require students to complete an internship at a location of his or her choice. The professional internship allows learners to work with an actual attorney and provides on the job training. Graduates, who successfully complete an internship, typically enjoy more employment opportunities than those who do not.
 

Certified paralegals are in high demand. Currently, there are over 240,000 paralegals working the United States, by 2018, that number is expected to increase by 28%. Paralegals earn anywhere from $30,000 to $75,000 per year, depending on where they work. Typically, large corporations, businesses, and law firms pay more than smaller ones. However, most all companies provide paralegals the opportunity to earn bonuses, as compensation for working on a long or difficult case. In addition to salaried wages and bonuses, paralegals enjoy benefits, such as insurance, paid time off, and retirement.
