When embarking upon a decluttering campaign in the home, it can be overwhelming trying to figure out where to start first. Ideally the process is done one room at a time, that way only one room is in upheaval at once and life can carry on in the rest of the house. The first step is to decide which room to begin in and start the process of getting rid of things no longer wanted or needed and go forth from that point. Once the room is decluttered, proper storage can be brought in and the job can be completed.
Once it is decided which room to begin in, it is time to start the piles. Designate boxes as trash, donate and keep piles and let the games begin. Every single item in the room should be evaluated and placed either in the designated box or next to it. This process can take awhile but it is necessary for an effective decluttering job that will result in a clean room with things in their storage place where the family can enjoy the space. After the assignment part of the job is done and everything has been labeled as trash, donate or keep, then the items that are trash and donate are ready to leave the house for good. Get them out immediately, even if it is just to the porch or the trunk of the car for now.
Now the room being cleaned should only have the things that are going to stay there in it, if there are kept items that will be going to other rooms, it is time to move those out as well. When the room contains only what will remain, then it is time to take stock of what kinds of storage items are necessary to put in place for those remaining items. There will be a place for everything, so that things can be put up and the room can be at least fairly tidy for people to come in and find what they want and need.
Storage options are many and varied. In this day and age, storage has become a kind of cult following or huge pet project for many people, some have even made a good business out of advising people on what types of storage containers to get for certain items and so forth. From bookshelves to trunks to plastic storage containers, the possibilities are many.
