Should You Buy a Water Softener?

rusty drain and sink nozzelTo most people, water is just water - but there are actually two different kinds. Depending on where you live, you may have either hard water or soft water. Hard water is full of minerals that come from the ground, while soft water has had these removed. Both have their pros and cons, but many people who live in areas that have hard water choose to get a water softener, for several different reasons.

Buying a water softener, especially if you want one that will soften the water for the entire house, is a bit of an investment. However, there are many benefits to having soft water. One of the most important ones is that hard water shortens the lifespan of things like washers, water heaters, and dishwashers. The minerals in the water build up in them, and those same minerals are hard on the pipes that bring the water to them, as well. Drains and faucets can also become clogged more easily from these mineral deposits. With a water softener, all of that's avoided and you won't have to worry about replacing appliances that use water nearly as often.

Another reason that a lot of people choose to have a water softener in the home is that soft water makes a person's skin feel better. Hard water puts a fine layer of minerals on the skin, which can make it feel dry and unpleasant. It can also make a person appear older because his skin won't look and feel as supple. That's more obvious with older people, but even younger people notice the effects of not having soft water to shower with. While the hard water won't actually hurt you, having your skin look better is always nice.

The minerals in hard water are healthy for you, but you can take a supplement to get them. If you eat a proper diet, you're getting enough of the minerals you need, anyway. Don't feel like buying a water softener is going to hurt your health, because that's not the case. It's a worthwhile investment to help your skin feel and look better and to protect your appliances from damage and early replacement. Just being able to keep your washer and other water-using appliances much longer can easily cover the cost of the water softener.
