Typically, you don't get to the point of starting your own pet grooming business without knowing what you're doing and being able to do it better than most.

That said, having a professional groom your pet every time can get a little expensive after awhile. Even if you want to take your pet to the groomer's now and then for a full upkeep, you should at least learn how to do a few basic things at home for your favorite little buddy.

Caring for Their Skin and Coat

The foundation of strong coat grooming actually starts with their diet. Make sure that your pets are getting the right kind of vitamins, proteins and minerals. Otherwise, all the grooming in the world won't make their coarse, rough hair any smoother, so start with good food. Secondly, make sure they get some exercise and sunlight now and then. Without good diet and exercise, you can forget their having a good coat.

Now, giving them a great, clean, fresh coat shouldn't actually involve daily baths. A daily bath can actually ruin the natural moisture of a dog's coat. Once a week should do fine. Find a dog shampoo that you like and keep them smelling fresh. They should learn to love their bath time whether in the tub or with the hose. Then just trim and comb as you please.

A good chew toy should take care of general oral hygiene for your dog, but a good brushing now and then can't hurt. The fact is that bad teeth can result in heart disease and other surprising health side effects, so make sure to keep your dog's mouth clean.

Nail Care

Cutting the nails is important as it keeps them from scratching you by accident, it keeps them from making noise as they walk across hardwood or tiled floors, and it leaves them feeling a little more comfortable, without their nails digging into their paws as they walk on hard flooring. Get a good nail trimmer or one of those automatic clippers and be careful not to cut too deeply and hurt your pooch's paws.
