Home healthcare jobs are professions in which a person administers healthcare in a person's home. This differentiates it from other forms of healthcare that require a patient to visit a doctor's office, clinic, or hospital to receive care.
The different kinds of home healthcare jobs that are available are diverse and varied. One example is a doctor who makes house calls to provide care to certain patients. This may be under special circumstances that only require one visit. A doctor may also perform regular house calls once a week or once a day. This would be the case for ill patients who wish to remain in their homes instead of constantly having to visit a clinic or live in a home for patients with special needs.
Due to the expense of such doctor house calls, this kind of care is usually only received by wealthy patients. Still, many patients in lower income brackets do often receive healthcare at home. This care is usually given by a home healthcare nurse.
A home healthcare nurse is usually a registered nurse who performs much of the same duties a normal nurse would perform. The only difference is these duties are performed in a patient's home. For example, the home healthcare nurse may check a patient's vital signs. This can include taking a patient's temperature, checking the patient's pulse, and testing the patient's blood pressure.
Overall, though, the kind of care provided will depend on that patient's specific circumstance. A nurse, for example, may redress a wound. He or she may also give the patient intravenous medication or take a blood sample for further testing. Other kinds of care given may be specific to the ailment a patient is suffering from. For example, patients with lung conditions may receive breathing treatments.
Other patients may need home healthcare services because they are disabled. In this case, a person may no longer have the ability to take complete care of him or herself. A home healthcare provider would then be sent to the home of that person to provide care. Care in this instance may involve giving the patient a bath or brushing his or her teeth. In other instances, house cleaning may be performed. However, this house cleaning would be performed by a person known as a nursing assistant as opposed to a registered nurse.
